SPOT

A quick note on the SPOT…I am providing public tracking through the share service on findmespot and through Spot Adventures. I really don’t know how well they work, so it should be interesting to see how this all works out.

It will doubtless be a learning experience.

  1. You will have to let me know what you think about SPOT. I am planning on using it on the AT for my family and friends to track my progress. Everyone says that they are amazing and love them. I cant wait to hear your opinion.

  2. So far it seems pretty nifty. I have the Spot Connect which require a cell phone (or some other blue tooth device, I guess) to be fully useful. I’m not yet sure how smart that is as there are now two points of failure instead of just one. The only feature available without the phone is SOS. I do wish SPOT would have included an I’m OK button on this version.

The flip side, though, is that I can compose short text messages for transmission. I am not limited to the three or four predefined messages that a standard SPOT has.

We’ll see how useful that is.

For hikers, however, it means extra weight. I’m also not sure how effective it will be in heavy tree cover. Given the ATs reputation as being a “long green tunnel” I do wonder if it will earn its’ keep on the trail.

Whatcha thinkin'?
